How can OEMs position themselves to win with plug-in electric vehicles?
There is growing momentum behind plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). However, it is too early to tell whether electrification will dominate the alternative vehicle market. Automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) should “hedge their bets” by creating processes and platforms across the alternative vehicle market. OEMs must recognize how they should position themselves to win while alternative fuel technologies and infrastructure continue to mature.
Based on our research, there are four growth strategies for PEVs:
The critical path forward
To better understand the path forward, three initial steps as critical for OEMs. These are:
Core processes need to be revamped
Alternative fuels pose a variety of challenges to OEM core processes. Regardless of which green technologies win significant market share, OEMs must begin revamping their core processes to prepare for mass production of vehicles that are not internal combustion engines. These processes range from developing and sourcing through the service and after-market and the recycling of the batteries.
