Accenture and Microsoft Oil and Gas Collaboration Survey 2011

The alliance is one of the largest and most significant relationships of its kind for both companies. Together, Accenture and Microsoft founded Avanade, a global IT consultancy dedicated to using the Microsoft platform.

Microsoft and Accenture’s study examines collaboration tools and their potential in the oil and gas industry. This latest study follows on from the 2010 survey and also provides a comparison on changes in the acceptance and proliferation of collaboration tools and social media channels in the oil and gas industry over the past two years.

The survey gathered responses from 205 oil and gas industry professionals within international, national and independent oil- and gas-related companies.  Key findings: 

• Almost 74 percent are using social media tools in the cloud for business collaboration — a significant increase over last year’s survey responses (62 percent).
   
• Public instant-messaging tools are used the most for business collaboration (38 percent, an 11 percent increase over last year), followed by internal company social networks (33 percent, a 17 percent increase over last year).
   
• Overall, professionals are working together more than ever, with 34 percent reporting that they are collaborating more this year than in the previous year.
   
• Almost a third of respondents (31 percent) said that improved technology-driven access to information could lessen the business impact resulting from the scarcity of skills and talent stemming from the aging work force.
