Android can be used in two main kinds of projects. The first is device creation whereby a manufacturer or network operators adopts Android as the primary development platform to create, customise, or specialise a device, for sale to consumers or enterprises, or for use in dedicated circumstances. The second is application creation projects when a company (or, sometimes, an individual) creates a version of an application or service that can run on Android-powered devices.
In combination, these work to create a virtuous circle of adoption. The greater the number of high quality Android devices that are created, the greater the attractiveness to application developers to target Android as one of their preferred platforms. And the availability of large numbers of desirable applications that run on Android will increasingly prompt manufacturers and network operators to specify the use of Android in their devices.
