According to new research by Accenture Development Partnerships and NetHope, 81 percent of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) rate text messaging on mobile phones as the most effective channel to engage with end beneficiaries in emerging markets. At the same time, 52 percent still see the value of using radio—a traditional, low-cost technology solution—to reach end users.
The research demonstrates that a wide range of technology solutions—from traditional to cutting-edge—should be explored to support consumers living and working in emerging markets and drive development outcomes. For instance, whilst the importance of mobile technology in growth plans was repeatedly underscored it is important to consider the most appropriate mobile technology to leverage; feature phones offering simple features, still predominate in emerging markets, preferred over smartphones for reasons of costs and ease of use. The research adds that besides mobile technology, there are other new technologies that may help developing countries leapfrog the existing, old-world methods to lift billions of people out of poverty.
It is important is to be creative in deploying the relevant technology based on local culture, infrastructure and preferences. It is equally important to adopt methods and approaches that leverage new technologies such as mobile phones to replace established technologies—eliminating the need for significant investment in infrastructure and positively impacting the way people live, work and connect.
This is the second chapter in a series that looks at the different ways technology is being deployed in the developing world to achieve development impact. The research draws on insights from our global survey of 293 private sector business leaders across Asia Pacific, Europe, North America, South America and Africa, 25 nonprofit leaders, as well as in-depth interviews with thought leaders across the development sector.
