The new age of nuclear energy is fraught with challenges of cost and complexity.
These require fresh approaches to the successful construction of new nuclear power plants. In particular, efficient program management underpinned and supported by information technology will be crucial for high performance, helping to create greater certainty, mitigate risks and introduce greater standardization to the nuclear power industry.
Advanced IT systems have the potential not only to address these complexities and time constraints, but also to transform the economics of the nuclear industry. Standardization, a term common in the IT industry, will have to become part of the nuclear sector’s language if utilities are to deliver new investments as scheduled and on budget.
Accenture believes an integrated IT infrastructure across licensing, design, procurement, construction and operations can facilitate efficient nuclear new-build operating models and lower costs during construction and subsequent operations.
Consistent, standardized operations will become increasingly important to allowing individual businesses to manage workflows efficiently. This will be even more critical for joint ventures that, owing to the sizeable capital investment and risk mitigation involved in nuclear projects, are likely to increase in the near term. Joint ventures are seen not only as a way to share risk across companies, but also as an opportunity to pool vital expertise.
