Powered by electronic medical records (EMR) and health information exchanges (HIEs), the “connected health ecosystem” will help to address many systemic challenges, including rising costs and patient expectations, an aging population and the increasing incidence of chronic disease.
In this report, Accenture discusses the transformation from fragmentation to connected health, identifying effective health information exchange as the vital first step. We describe key challenges around HIE, including security, interoperability, consent, access control, data quality and compliance.
We also explain how organizations can address those challenges through effective information governance—which Accenture defines as the processes, functions, standards and technologies that enable high-quality information to be created, stored, communicated, valued and used effectively and securely in support of an organization’s strategic goals.
Finally, we recommend the Accenture Information Governance Framework for Health as a model for achieving effective information governance.
