Introducing the 2010-2011 Georgetown Public Policy Institute Dialogue Series
Growing Mandates, Diminishing Resources: Meeting Expectations Across Competing Priorities
Today’s federal organizations face increasing pressure to fulfill their mandates, even as their budgets are frozen or cut. In June 2010, President Obama ordered all non-security agencies to produce plans for reducing their budgets by five percent. Government executives say they’re already feeling the squeeze from these conflicting pressures. In a recent Accenture-commissioned survey of decision-makers within the federal government:
- 75 percent said that meeting grant demands with fewer resources is the biggest challenge they face
- 67 percent said that allocating limited resources across competing priorities is the greatest challenge to improving service delivery
Federal organizations must find innovative ways to meet these challenges by increasing their operational efficiency and improving service.
