Data privacy and protection shortcomings can do irreparable harm to companies’ balance sheets, not to mention their brands, credibility and customer trust and relationships.
Our findings reinforced the notion that data privacy and protection is becoming more difficult for organizations to address and that sensitive personal data increasingly is at risk. Among others, this is translated to a notable difference between organizations’ intentions regarding data privacy and how they actually ensure compliance with it.
In addition, a majority of organizations have lost sensitive personal information, and among these organizations, the biggest causes are internal—therefore something they potentially could control. The good news is that organizations that exhibit a “culture of caring” with respect to data privacy and protection are far less likely to experience security breaches. It is also interesting to note that the results showed some distinct contrasts between Dutch businesses and their global counterparts.
