Accenture People: achieving high performance by connecting colleagues around the globe
People are Accenture’s competitive advantage, and the company strives to connect its global workforce of more than 186,000 people, so improving its ability to deliver high performance to clients. To help achieve this goal, Accenture’s IT organization created Accenture People, an online environment that makes it possible for employees to share skills, interests and activities across a global corporate network.
Prior to the creation of Accenture People, communication solutions such as the Accenture People Directory and Knowledge Exchange Expert Profile contained the necessary structure for employees to share their expertise. But because the solutions were not interactive, employees found them time consuming and a less-than-ideal way to promote skills and experience.
Accenture understands the importance of having an integrated approach to information access across an enterprise—Accenture’s own experience with clients and Accenture High Performance IT research1shows that employees need greater access to all types of data to achieve better decision making and drive business performance. Accenture’s ongoing research into High Performance Business2 shows that organizations with high-performance IT proactively adopt emerging technologies as a way to gain competitive advantage.

Based on employee suggestions, Accenture’s IT organization developed Accenture People, which is much more than just a digital people directory. Accenture People is a collaborative business-networking site where employee profiles begin with corporate, non-private data, such as work organization, level, phone number, office location, reporting structure and company anniversary. Each profile is populated with standard company information and Accenture employees are encouraged to expand their profiles. Employees' internal skills and resume information are automatically pulled into profiles. The interface is familiar and easy to use—reminiscent of popular social networking sites.
Accenture People helps employees tap into expert resources and address specific business problems. It also serves as an avenue for deeper professional growth. Professional and collegial connections can be formed when an employee’s webpage is customized with a photo and details about his or her professional experience, education, areas of expertise and preferred contact methods, as well as interests, hobbies and other optional personal information. Blogging capabilities amplify opportunities for sharing experience and expertise.
Accenture People helps employees quickly find resources—often within minutes. Oliver Fusil, who leads the Accenture Performance Workspace and Knowledge Management offering in Europe, says: “I needed to quickly find an expert in the area of digital asset management for my client. First I tapped into my ‘old’ network with a blanket e-mail. Second, I went to Accenture People. In less than 10 minutes, I found the expert I needed and sent him my request. In less than two hours, I confirmed with my client that I had found the right person. Interestingly, my network and the e-mail trail also yielded the same result. The difference was one to two days in time. I’ll definitely recommend that my teams use Accenture People to keep their profiles updated.”
In the future, Accenture will enhance Accenture People, with a focus on enabling stronger connections between people through accurate and fresh profile data. Utilities will mine internal information sources, such as e-mail messages, and provide suggestions to the user on certain client references or skills they may want to include in their profiles. This will enable richer search results and will make it easier for Accenture to leverage its deep reservoir of talent to deliver high performance.
