Companies within the Böhler-Uddeholm group tend to operate fairly autonomously (in alignment with corporate guidelines and using corporate administrative functions). While the major flow of communication and information exchange takes place within the respective companies rather than between the individual companies of the group, particular and regular communication and information exchange needs exist between the Mills and Sales companies.
Over the years the individual companies within the Böhler-Uddeholm group have developed their own, independent Intranet solutions, varying from company-wide intranets to departmental or Interest group intranets.
In total, more than 30 disparate intranets were spread over different companies, functional areas and interest groups within the client organization. Multiple operation and maintenance costs occurred but were not easily visible and quantifiable because they were distributed throughout the individual organizations.
Disparate (local) intranets posed a high entry barrier for new target groups. Group-wide, common tools and functionality were missing, e.g. no common communication and information tool and no group-wide knowledge base & search functionality existed.
The objective of the Common Employee Portal Pilot project was to provide the platform and functionality to consolidate these individual Intranet solutions and establish a Common Employee Portal (Intranet) Solution within the Böhler-Uddeholm group, based on SAP NetWeaver Portal.
Accenture developed a Solution Blueprint for the Common Employee Portal and then defined and developed a common set of Portal configurations (templates) and structural guidelines in form of a Portal Toolbox. The Portal Toolbox was then used for the design and roll-out of the individual, country-specific Intranets for major companies in the Böhler-Uddeholm group, replacing their current Intranet solutions.
Accenture assisted in the implementation of the first two Pilot solutions using the Portal Toolbox: the Böhler-Uddeholm Corporate Intranet and the local Intranet for Uddeholm in Sweden.
The Common Employee Portal solution provides extended functionality compared to the previous, disparate Intranet solutions, in particular in the areas of Collaboration of Knowledge Management. Major improvement areas include improved internal communication and knowledge sharing within the group and easier access for Böhler-Uddeholm employees to tools and information.
The entire solution is based on a central SAP NetWeaver Portal platform which allows Böhler-Uddeholm to realize synergies and experience curve cost reductions for implemented functionality (implement once; deploy many times) and to reduce time needed to deploy new functionality through the Portal Toolbox framework.
The Portal Toolbox and guidelines provided with the Toolbox enable Böhler-Uddeholm to independently roll out portal functionality after the Pilot phase and to establish a consistent and connected Employee Portal solution across the individual companies in the Böhler-Uddeholm group.
