What you’ll achieve

Use AI to restore coral reefs

Coral reefs protect shorelines from tropical storms, provide food and income for 100 million people and produce $36 billion in economic value annually.

Alarmingly, they are in danger of disappearing.

Restoration depends on accurately assessing the overall health of the coral reef. But traditional methods just aren’t cutting it.

This is where the innovative thinking of Marcus Lee Sheng Wei, a data engineering analyst, and his team comes in. Together, they developed an AI-powered solution to help accurately monitor the reefs. It uses computer vision technology to sort through the tens of thousands of video images that pour in from an underwater camera system.

"Tuning algorithms may not sound terribly exciting,” he says, “but it is when you’re watching how they improve the images of fish captured and how this work adds to our understanding of marine life, how better to protect it. That’s when its true value shines."

To date, 71,000  images have been collected and analyzed. The real-world impact of AI is clear for all to see—accurately.
