Today, people are using tablets and smart phones to do their jobs, taking advantage of social networking sites to find and relay the information they need. The jump in consumer demand for portable devices with mobile connectivity, and the rapid growth of applications and services running on them, is bring three industries together: IT, consumer electronics, and telecommunications.
Why not take advantage of this convergence so that employees and customers alike can experience the same versatility and convenience in the workplace that they’re getting in their personal lives?
Jean-Laurent Poitou—Accenture’s Managing Director for Growth and Strategy, Communications & High Tech—discussed how traditional communications channels in the enterprise are being progressively enveloped and superseded by mobile channels. The following discussion covered — around the next "killer apps" for business; the building blocks of a mobile ecosystem; the importance of the user experience (as it alters how products and services are marketed and supported); and the role of networks, network services, devices, and software—left everyone with a shared impression: the mobile ecosystem is a "brave new world," full of opportunities but still in the early stages of development.
In addition to making an aggressive investment, managements needs to understand these truths:
- Technology is just a means; the case for usability and functionality is key
- Mobility solutions need to be compatible with legacy IT, while offering improvements
- Security is paramount; questions of control and regulation should also be taken into careful consideration
All in all, everyone agrees: the future is bright for the mobile ecosystem.
