Open markets and a changing competitive situation compelled TeliaSonera become more efficient and drive higher quality for end customers throughout its organization. TeliaSonera decided to introduce six individual SAP-based systems along with numerous dependant projects—all at the same time. Keen to do the right things in the right way, TeliaSonera chose Accenture to help create a strategic project portfolio management IT solution to best implement its corporate strategy and achieve its business goals.

TeliaSonera selected Accenture for its ability to help clients achieve high performance and for its strong integration capabilities with SAP NetWeaver. Accenture's ability to draw from a pool of more than 19,000 SAP-skilled professionals and to leverage its experiences in delivering large-scale, complex systems were also key considerations.

Working in close collaboration with SAP, Accenture developed a pilot for a set of business practices to bring the projects into tight integration and harmony with business operations and provide structure and processes for project portfolio governance. The solution includes common project model and project portfolio management methods, project portfolio management and communication and full compatibility and integration with TeliaSonera's heterogeneous system environment (several financial, HR and other key systems) and SAP and other vendor systems.

The solution provided for a very standardized and automated environment with the ability to support more than 1,000 projects, new ideas and business concepts and hundreds of users in several countries. In this environment, Accenture helped implement several SAP software modules, including SAP xApp Resource and Portfolio Management, SAP xApp Product Definition, SAP NetWeaver Portal and SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence.

With help from Accenture, TeliaSonera is operating its business at a much higher level of performance. The solution helped TeliaSonera lower costs and increase efficiency both at the profit center and corporate levels. With improved communication and greater scalability, the company has better project and end-result quality resulting in shorter lead times, faster reaction time on the markets and more visibility of relative strengths, weaknesses, dynamics and dependencies of monitored projects. Projects are now managed uniformly and implemented efficiently with flexibility in portfolio structure, portfolio reporting and workflow support. There is better support for resource capacity management from role and skill perspectives, strategy planning, systematic analysis and decision making.
