Business
Challenge As content goes digital, what are book publishers worried
about? At the highest level, making eBooks work for consumers. The Association
of American Publishers (AAP) took a proactive approach to this digital
challenge by promoting the creation of an eBook marketplace that is growing,
secure and economically attractive.
How Accenture
Helped The AAP and Accenture recommended open standards and
publisher requirements in three critical areas: Numbering, Metadata and Digital
Rights Management (DRM). The Numbering team suggested a numbering standard
based on the International DOI Foundation's Digital Object Identifier allowing
for identification of eBooks in multiple formats. The Metadata team recommended
standards which facilitate the creation of accurate and descriptive product
information. The DRM team developed a comprehensive description of DRM features
needed to enable new products and new business models in the eBook marketplace.
“We believe that the work that Accenture has
done with the Association of American Publishers and a number of the leading
publishing companies in the United States is very applicable to other content
areas.”

Accenture High Performance
Delivered Publishers and other industry participants are putting these
standards to use. As the publishing industry transforms itself to prepare for
books in cyberspace, the AAP and Accenture are paving the way for widespread
consumer adoption by creating a win-win situation for all industry
participants.
"We are witnessing a rebirth of the publishing industry and
our standards lay the groundwork for making more ebooks available. They make it
easier for consumers to find books and for authors and publishers to get into
the market," said Pat Schroeder, President and CEO of AAP. "Our work encourages
reading and experiencing content in new ways—any time, anywhere, and on any
device." To Top |
