Euskaltel: Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO)

Euskaltel teamed with Accenture to integrate systems capabilities across the full range of the company's convergent services and thereby to enable its MVNO launch. Accenture helped reengineer existing business support systems (BSS) and operations support systems (OSS) prior to the launch. Migration to the new BSS and OSS systems has positioned Euskaltel to provide excellent customer service even during periods of rapid growth.

Euskaltel is a global telecommunications operator in the Basque country of Spain, offering fixed and mobile telephone services, as well as Internet and television services. It is the top broadband operator in the autonomous Basque region, with a 25 percent market share in the telecommunications sector, including 45 percent share in fixed telephony, 44 percent in broadband, 27 percent in mobile telephony, and 30 percent in Digital TV. In 2005, its income for operations amounted to €315 million, with €24.2 million in profits. Euskaltel is deploying a nextgeneration fiber-optic network in the Basque country with an investment of €1.2 billion—€600 per citizen—the largest network investment per inhabitant in Spain.

Entering the Basque telecommunications marketplace in the late 1990s, Euskaltel quickly rose to dominance through aggressive expansion in a full offering of convergent services. Because of the need to integrate system capabilities across the full range of the company's convergent services, Euskaltel needed to migrate its legacy systems to a more open platform. Such a migration would help the company provide excellent customer service even during periods of rapid growth.

Euskaltel asked Accenture to migrate its Vantive-based legacy systems to an open, Microsoft .NET platform. In only three months, Accenture was able to successfully reconfigure and extend the capabilities of Euskaltel's systems, facilitating the move from its previous role as a mobile services reseller and continuing the company's momentum toward high performance as an MVNO and convergent services provider.

Accenture has helped Euskaltel to put in place the technologies to support Euskaltel’s entire range of services—fixed, mobile, broadband and television—as well as its entire base of subscribers, whether prepaid or postpaid. In so doing, Accenture and Euskaltel have created an innovative solution that gives Euskaltel the capabilities to keep it one step ahead in the race for high performance as the competition to acquire and retain Spanish customers grows more intense.
