Accenture's R&D organization, Accenture Technology Labs, continually explores hundreds of emerging technologies to identify new trends and help clients take advantage of the opportunities they offer to become high-performance organizations. Our research also enables Accenture to make well-informed decisions about our own business strategy, investments and capability development so that we are best positioned to serve our clients as new technologies mature. Our focus areas Accenture conducts R&D in the following areas: - Mobility and Sensors: Mobile devices and the integration of mobile applications into the enterprise are a major focus, and we are leaders in near-field communication (NFC), a technology that dramatically expands the usefulness of the near-ubiquitous mobile phone. Moreover, to help clients capitalize on the opportunities of mobility, the Labs is investigating ways to equip objects and environments with miniaturized sensors, tagging technologies and communications.
- Analytics and Insight: Focuses on improving businesses' ability to access, analyze and act upon business intelligence in the emerging real-time economy. Our R&D explores how leading-edge insight techniques, including Predictive Monitoring, could be used as the next key to competitive advantage.
- Human-Computer Interaction: Examines how emerging technologies can help further enhance the effectiveness of the workforce and includes the areas of collaboration, interaction and visualization. Our R&D leads to innovations like the Accenture Personal Performance Coach. Based on the Accenture Mobile Personal Services Platform, this prototype transforms the mobile phone into a personal effectiveness coach for both work and home.
- Systems Integration: Focuses on helping Accenture and our clients achieve advances in software engineering and systems integration. We bring innovation to the design, architecture, building, deployment, analysis and management of large, technology-based business solutions by testing and developing new technologies and tools in several of our experimental software facilities. One prototype, the Repository Navigation Tool, enables large software projects to perform traceability and impact analysis by finding inter-relationships among the large number of documents in a software project repository.
Our approach to R&D Given the importance of technology innovation as a driver of high performance, the Labs investigate how technology will shape the future and invent the next wave of cutting-edge business solutions. "We combine the creativity and deep expertise of our PhDs in the Labs with the real-world knowledge and business acumen of our global network of technologists who work with clients every day," explains Don Rippert, chief technology officer. "As a result, we are uniquely able to help CIOs and business executives envision the future and to prioritize their investments in—and use of—technology innovation to achieve high performance." The Labs' work encompasses watching for promising new technologies, building prototypes of potential applications, developing points of view around technology trends, driving first-of-a-kind projects and incubating potential new practice areas. We work closely with: - Innovators in industry and academia: Researchers that are advancing the boundaries of technical knowledge.
- Business and governments organizations: Our R&D team spends more than 35 percent of its time with clients on projects or in Innovation Workshops. This collaboration provides the insight needed to pinpoint where technology innovation can intersect with today's organizational, industry and competitive challenges to drive high performance.
- Accenture's industry teams: The R&D team at Accenture Technology Labs works closely with Accenture's industry-focused innovation teams to tailor technology prototypes and solutions to meet industry-specific needs.
