Research Interests
My current research interest is in the area of Web services and service-oriented architecture (SOA). Specifically, I am interested in utilizing various aspects of collaborative software engineering to industrialize the process of developing and maintaining large scale Web services. I am also interested in semantic data integration, open source movements, rich Internet applications, software analysis and transformation.
Recent Projects
Project Tarpon (project leader): The Tarpon project is an initiative to create a reference SOA application that our clients will be buying three to five years from now. Tarpon will create a conceptual prototype to illustrate the functionality and benefits of the application, design business processes and relevant services and implement a subset of those services using different vendor platforms. An essential part of Tarpon is to validate some of the key technical assumptions that many SOA projects have to make in regards to cross-platform interoperability as well as the maintainability and performance of the system. Instead of solely relying on the claims made by the platform vendors, Tarpon will validate these assumptions through a set of fairly comprehensive experiments. The results of these experiments will be made available to the rest of our SOA practitioners to help reduce the technical risks of our SOA client engagements. Knowledge Discovery Tool (project leader): This tool integrates and cross-references information automatically from disparate sources based on an enterprise's knowledge needs to support research and investigation tasks. Our approach has been successfully applied in a wide range of domains -- from drug discovery process in pharmaceutical companies to crime investigation in government agencies. I am actively involved in the Systems Integration Lab. Selected Publications Architectural Mismatch in Service-Oriented Architectures K. Bierhoff, M. Grechanik and E. S. Personal Interests I like designing and building a wide range of things—from computers to furniture. I also enjoy music—both listening and playing, although I am not terribly good with any particular instrument. My family and I enjoy traveling. My daughter Caroline got her United Airlines' Premier status by her first birthday! Also, to my wife's amazement, I started enjoying cooking (I guess from watching too much Food Channel). To Top |
