Research Interests
Information visualization and presentation (gleaning better knowledge out of the machine), machine learning and AI (developing better knowledge inside the machine), and most importantly to me, human-computer interaction (surviving the exchange). Also: the machine as a social tool: collaboration, social computing, and better communication. Recent Projects
Interactive Wall Technology (developer): The interactive wall technology is a large format, high resolution interactive screen that allows multiple people to view, manipulate, and collaborate with large amounts of information. The technology can be used in many scenarios, ranging from mission critical command and control rooms to high impact advertising. The project exists both as a research prototype, with new applications under development in the Labs, and a high-profile commercial implementation in the advertising/entertainment area (currently at O'Hare and JFK airports). Some research prototype applications are featured at http://wall.accenture.com/demos.asp Accenture Information Source: An
application for visualizing and browsing a collection of up to 100,000
documents, the InfoSource was designed as an alternative to a conventional web
interface. A very large quantity of information is presented on a single
display surface which functions as a sort of dynamic map, supporting
video-game-quick access to any document. By providing a stable, colorful,
information-dense context for the user's exploration of the library, we give
the user a better grasp of the document space, in both its local and global
aspects, which we believe makes for a more efficient and more pleasurable
research tool. Selected Publications
