Increasingly, computer systems know more about our
surroundings than we do. These systems may know what boxes need to be shipped
out, which manufacturing machines are causing bottlenecks, and what equipment
is due for inspection or overhaul. Many workers do not work directly with these
computers, and many tasks preclude the use of handheld machines, so the workers
do not get real-time access to this data. eCaptions uses augmented reality
technologies to provide real-time data about a working environment. A worker
using the eCaptions system wears a pair of lightweight glasses enabled with a
see-through head-mounted display. While a worker carries out the normal tasks
of the day, the system is watching what the worker is doing and annotating the
environment with real-time data pulled from the appropriate databases.
