Sandy Ogg is Chief Human Resources officer of Unilever, one of the world's largest corporations, with a truly vast and diverse number of employees. He believes that a sound succession management strategy is key to managing such a workforce effectively.
The reason for this is that the demand for talent outstrips the supply. Thus if a company does not have good succession planning capabilities it can end up, Ogg warns, "with big capability gaps that you can't fill." Succession planning has of necessity therefore become a key part of the talent management mix.
At Unilever, succession management is closely integrated into the overall thinking and ethos of the business to ensure that the company has the capability to achieve its strategic goals.
