At Accenture, we believe that high performers of the future will be defined, at least in part, by how well they have responded to the opportunities—and challenges—presented by the sustainability agenda. Sustainability, particularly as it relates to environmental responsibility and climate change, is a complex topic that has captured the attention of business leaders worldwide. The momentum around this issue at the very top levels of business and government is like nothing I have ever seen; nearly every leader I speak with is seeking ways to navigate the sustainability agenda. Also, a recent Accenture study found that business executives worldwide increasingly see climate change as a major issue they must address as part of their business strategy if they are to achieve and sustain high performance in the future. At Accenture, we define a commitment to sustainability as the way an organization creates value by maximizing its positive (and minimizing its negative) effects on society, on the environment and on economic conditions. Accenture recently launched a new and differentiated capability in this area, and our fast-growing Sustainability practice is working with clients to adopt more eco-friendly business practices, drive long-term economic value and ultimately improve the broader sustainability agenda. With services ranging from sustainable supply chain, to carbon and energy management, to “smart” buildings and green IT, we have a holistic and comprehensive approach that is research based and provides a unique perspective on what it takes to integrate sustainable practices into the fabric of an organization. Looking at our own organization, Accenture is committed to understanding and reducing our environmental impact in the locations where we operate. As part of that effort, we published a corporate environmental policy outlining our commitment across our entire global organization to sustainability in the areas of travel, procurement and technology. We recently signed the United Nations Global Compact, we filed a report with the Carbon Disclosure Project and we became a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. We also achieved ISO 14001 certification in a number of locations and have factored in environmental considerations based on The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method), and Green Star into our office design decisions. These important corporate actions, along with our ongoing research and client experience, are helping us to develop ground-breaking insights into a full range of sustainability challenges and opportunities. As more and more organizations seek to address their environmental challenges, we believe Accenture is uniquely positioned to help them chart a course toward high performance through sustainability.
