Climate change and environmental sustainability present new challenges for Accenture, our clients and our suppliers. Accenture recognizes its impact and is rising to meet those challenges. We are committed to understanding and reducing our environmental impact in terms of carbon, water and waste across the facilities, data centers and communities in which we work and live. Given the nature of our business, carbon emissions from business travel and office energy, as well as waste, paper and water consumption, make up our primary environmental impacts. We have developed detailed measurement tools to enhance our reporting and set carbon reduction targets, leading to a more comprehensive submission to the Carbon Disclosure Project in 2009 as compared to prior reports. From fiscal 2007 to fiscal 2008, we reduced carbon emissions by 9 percent. We are committed to reducing our carbon emissions per employee by 25 percent for fiscal 2009 and by 40 percent for fiscal 2012 compared to our fiscal 2007 baseline. We have implemented practices to reduce our energy use, including the consolidation of data centers and changes to how we power and cool them. We also source more than 20 percent of office energy from renewable sources. This is a global effort including our offices in Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. In addition to reducing Accenture's own environmental impact, we help our clients achieve sustainable high performance. Through our innovative portfolio of sustainability services including carbon and energy management, sustainable supply chain, smart grid, Accenture Green Technology Suite, and Accenture Smart Building Alliance, Accenture helps clients integrate sustainability into their businesses and improve IT infrastructure and capabilities to reduce their carbon footprint while increasing efficiency and productivity. Our commitment to sustainability also extends to our supply chain. In addition to working with existing suppliers to improve performance, last year, more than 85 percent of our vendor procurement requests required information about the vendors' environmental efforts and impact. Our target is to reach 100 percent by the end of fiscal 2009. Likewise, our employees play a key role in helping Accenture achieve its environmental goals. Embedded in Accenture's core values and Code of Business Ethics and formalized through our Environmental Responsibility Policy [PDF, 65KB], employees bring Accenture's commitment to the environment to life through their actions and the solutions they develop for clients.
