Orange UK: IT Organization Transformation

Accenture helped Orange UK improve its operational efficiency through a major transformation of its technical organization. The program paid for itself in less than 18 months through cost savings and efficiency gains.

Orange UK, a unit within Orange SA, is the leading wireless operator in the United Kingdom. To support its rapid growth, Orange UK’s IT department had focused on developing new systems rapidly. But as the wireless industry in the UK matured and growth slowed, Orange’s management realized that the information technology structures and processes which had served the company well in the past would be less appropriate for the future.

Orange UK turned to Accenture to help it redesign its IT organization and transform it into an intensely customer-focused unit.

Over 15 months the Orange and Accenture team transformed the department with a focus on delivering tangible results and strengthening the relationship between the IT department and the rest of the organization.

Work ranged from redesigning the organizational structure to designing and implementing new processes to programs of behavioral and cultural change.

The transformation program designed and executed by Orange and Accenture led to a reduction in unplanned systems downtime by more than 50 percent while on-time delivery and reliability of new systems improved dramatically. Efficiency gains of 20-30 percent have been measured and output is up by more than 20 percent.

In fact, the transformation program paid for itself in less than 18 months through cost savings and efficiency gains. Now Orange UK’s IT department has the processes and capabilities to build on this transformation to deliver business value for years to come.
