What We Bring Into the Company How We Run the Company How We Go to Market
What We Bring Into the Company Buying Sustainable Products We are working to ensure that the things we buy are as sustainable as possible. For example:
- All the paper that we buy for our photocopiers and printers is from 100 percent recycled content.
- We have switched some of the packaging in our canteens to corn starch which is more sustainable throughout its life cycle than plastic.
- The carpets in our flagship London office are made from 90 percent recycled materials.
- Where possible we buy our electricity from a renewable tariff.
Bringing Social and Environmental Factors into Our Supplier Relationships We are a world class procurement services provider and strive to integrate progressive higher standards of environmental responsibility and social diversity in our purchasing of services and products throughout Accenture. Our sustainable procurement programme includes setting environmental and supplier diversity goals for:
- Each category of commodities and
- For key sourcing projects and supplier relationships.
Progress towards achieving these objectives is closely monitored.Read more about our activity with suppliers in the marketplace. How We Run the Company Reducing our Carbon Footprint We are measuring, monitoring and managing our carbon footprint to enable us to reduce our contribution to global climate change. Our carbon footprint is made up of our business travel and our office energy use.
Business Travel
- We are trialling the latest technology and improving our facilities and services to make it easier for staff to hold virtual meetings and reduce the environmental, financial and social costs of travelling.
- We are encouraging staff to travel by train rather than plane where appropriate.
Office Energy Use
- Lighting–our office lighting is controlled by motion sensors to reduce waste and our newest office has highly efficient lighting installed.
- Equipment–our equipment, such as laptops is specified to be low energy and as most staff work from laptops, PCs are rarely left on overnight.
- Our facilities and services staff work with landlords to ensure our buildings are managed efficiently. Initiatives such as the cleaners all working on one floor at a time reduce wasted energy from lighting.
Waste and Recycling Initiatives We use the ‘waste hierarchy’–Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to guide our waste management and reduction initiatives. Some examples of these are below:
- Reduce–Our PCs and printers are set up to double-sided print as default and we have introduced ‘e payslips’ to reduce our paper use.
- Re-use–e.g. we have a water bottling system so we provide filtered tap water in re-useable glass bottles for our corporate hospitality rather than disposable bottled water. We have a system for storing and managing office furniture so we can re-use it rather than dispose of it when it is no longer needed.
- Recycle–when we do dispose of furniture we send it environmental charity Greenworks who re-furbish it and sell it onto community-based organisations. We have office recycling facilities in all offices and we are working to improve the range of things we can recycle, including food waste.
Employee Engagement and Communications As a services organisation, our greatest area of influence is through our staff. Successful environmental improvement is reliant on strong two-way communication with staff around what we are doing as an organisation and what stuff can do to make a difference.
- We have an ‘Environment Action Group’ set up by staff on a voluntary basis to enable employees across the business to taker practical action by sharing ideas, knowledge and best practice case studies and developing tools to support change. The community is guided by a steering group and has a dedicated portal site as well as events to prompt discussion.
- We have a programme of events and communications to engage stag and raise environmental awareness, from office based events celebrating World Environment Day to virtual ‘webinars’ on environmental issues, to online collaboration tools to gather ideas and feedback from people.
Performance and Continual Improvement We are committed to continuous environmental improvement and have ISO14001 certification for the environmental management system in our flagship London office.
