In order to establish the extent to which LSPs are getting
integration right, Accenture commissioned in-depth interviews with Chief
Executive Officers and senior executives within some of South Africa’s leading
LSPs in late 2001. The interviewees were closely involved in strategic
decision-making in their organisations, representing primarily large and medium
-sized LSPs across South Africa, with “significant operations”. LSPs were
included in the survey on the basis of their turnover, as well as the breadth
of their service offerings and their prominence within the market. In order to
benchmark the information gathered, the results were compared to results from a
parallel study conducted by Accenture in Europe during 2001 (eFulfilment: The
Future Awaits Pan-European Logistics Service Provider Survey 2001 (Accenture,
2001)).
The research indicates that on the one hand the market is
over-populated, with many small LSPs competing for low margin ‘commodity’
business, putting enormous pressure on logistics prices. On the other,
customers are starting to demand a greater range of increasingly integrated
services, which, in the short term, they appear not to be prepared to pay for.
