 In
1971, the Management and Information Consulting division began its journey in
Johannesburg, with a few select clients. Growth started off slowly and by 1981
the staff complement had reached a mere 35 people. Our Cape Town and Durban
offices opened 13 years after the opening of the Johannesburg office, with the
Pretoria office following in hot pursuit in 1985.
By 1990 the staff complement had soared to 313, and reached a further
high of 626 employees by 1995. We now boast approximately 1,600 professionals
operating out of Johannesburg, Cape Town and Pretoria.
Our business strategy has also undergone tremendous change,
from a strong focus on systems integration, through journey management, to a
business integration approach. Now Accenture helps deliver innovation that
enables our clients to become high-performance businesses.
Throughout our history, we have continued to raise the bar
and look to the future. And we have taken several actions to facilitate our
future success:
- Following arbitration proceedings that were completed in
August 2000, we became an independent company.
- In January 2001, we changed our name to Accenture and
launched a new brand and image in the marketplace.
- In April 2001, our partners voted overwhelmingly to pursue
an initial public offering. This decision reflects our company's continued
commitment to strengthen our ability to deliver the highest value solutions to
our clients, and to continue to provide competitive rewards to motivate and
attract the best people.
- In July 2001, we became a public company and began trading
shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ACN.
- In September 2005, Accenture (NYSE: ACN) sold a 30 percent stake in its South African operations to a black-owned trust as a pledge of its commitment to the local community and support for the South African governments's Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) initiative.
William Mzimba, Chief Executive, Accenture South Africa, says,
"Accenture is a truly South African organisation that brings global expertise to bear in the local marketplace. Our efforts in BEE are not driven by the need for compliance, but are rooted in economics and enable us to provide business solutions that reflect varied thinking and the clients we serve."
