Cell-C Take a Girl Child to Work On 25 May 2006 Accenture made its contribution towards preparing future female leaders for the job market by participating in Cell-C Take a Girl Child to Work Day. This initiative has been dubbed South Africa's "largest collaborative act of volunteerism," with nearly 800 companies and over 200,000 girls participating this year. Girls from Phelindaba High School in Atteridgeville, Pretoria; Rylands High in Cape Town; and Sekano-Ntoane High School in Soweto were hosted at each of our offices. Our Johannesburg office also accommodated 10 girls from Imfundo, an Accenture-supported education initiative. The day's events included: - A networking breakfast.
- Welcome and company overview presented by senior female leaders from Accenture.
- An interactive project team scenario and discussion, followed by group presentations. Each girl's presentation techniques were evaluated and tips made for improvement.
- Accenture project highlights were presented by Accenture consultants, and in the Johannesburg office, Semabela Dioka, supply chain team leader for Eskom's Sisonke Initiative, provided the girls with client insights.
- A skills workshop covering career path selection, CV writing, the job search process and job interview skills.
- A mock interview session and guidelines on interview techniques.
The day closed on a high note with each of the girls receiving a certificate of participation and the Accenture participants getting lots of hugs from the girls who were thrilled to have this opportunity. This is what some of the girls had to say: "I learnt that there are opportunities for women, we just have to erase the idea that certain tasks are only for men." "Today I've learnt that it is not my intelligence that will make me successful in life, but what I do with my intelligence that will make me reach my goals and dreams." "I now know how women manage their daily lives and coping in the work environment." Winter Warmers Each year, during May, Accenture personnel collect blankets to give to the needy in winter. In 2007, blankets were donated to the following organisations: - Jabulani Khakibos Kids (street children in Johannesburg
