Accenture Young Musician of the Year Award |
Belfast born flautist John Brown has been crowned the Accenture/Camerata Ireland Young Musician of the Year 2009. The presentation, made on March 9, 2009, at a special ceremony in the National Concert Hall, was followed by a master-class by the award winner with children from a south inner-city homework club who were invited along as part of the "Music 4 Me" programme–a unique collaboration between professional musicians and local children.
|
| |
The master class took place after John received his award and in advance of John’s debut performance with the Camerata Ireland orchestra. The Accenture/Camerata Ireland Young Musician of the Year award, now in its fifth year, aims to encourage established orchestras and artists to take talented young musicians under their wing, helping to ease them into public performance. |
| |
The 10 children who took part in the musical master class are members of the Dolphin House Homework Club and hail from the Dolphins Barn, Inchicore and Rialto areas of Dublin 8. The Music 4 Me programme allows children who would not normally get the opportunity to do so to play, listen, participate and experience the type of music that appeals to them. The programme was developed by arts development agency Common Ground in partnership with local homework clubs. |
| |
Speaking at the event, Mark Ryan, country managing director for Accenture in Ireland, said: “Today’s event presented Accenture with a unique opportunity to combine two projects we feel very passionate about–the Accenture/Camerata Ireland ‘Young Musician of the Year’ award and also our work with the inner-city based, arts development agency, Common Ground. This is the fifth year Accenture has sponsored the ‘Young Musician of the Year’ award and I want to congratulate John Brown on his tremendous achievement. The award is testament to the obvious talent and potential of this young and up-and-coming flautist. |
| |
“We are also delighted that John could take the time today to conduct a master-class for those children partaking in the ‘Music 4 Me’ program," Ryan continued. "Accenture has been supporting the great work of the Common Ground organisation for a number of years now and their ‘Music 4 Me’ initiative has undoubtedly a very positive impact on the children’s artistic and creative development.” |
| |
Brown is a graduate of the Royal College of Music, London, became the Clandeboye Young Musician during the Clandeboye Festival in Co Down in August 2008, where he competed with nine other young musicians from around the country for the title. While studying at the Royal Academy of Music, Brown won the annual Academy Flute Prize each year. He has participated in master classes with Sir James Galway, William Bennett and Ian Clarke, and has performed with Sir Colin Davies and Sir Elton John. |
