The Accenture Institute for Public Service Value conducted an in-depth examination of how public service organisations around the world are using performance management. From our research, we have identified six essential components of performance management systems. Implementing these different components can help public service managers undertake performance management successfully to attain outcomes that improve the lives of citizens they serve. The resulting report Managing Current and Future Performance: Striving to Create Public Value features various case studies including New South Wales (NSW) Health in Australia that shows the potential of performance management as a way to use an organisation’s skills, resources and finances more effectively. With high-level sponsorship and ongoing leadership within the organisation, NSW Health officials began building a performance management program organised around bold, citizen-centred outcomes. When performance management is used to shape continued organisational improvement and to guide the delivery of social outcomes, the result is improved value for citizens.
